I really like the video "Stripes" from Brandy Clark's 12 Stories. I don't want to spoil the song for people who have not heard the song yet, but the chorus perfectly captures the attitude of a woman who is SO DONE with her good for nothing husband. It conveys a woman who's hurt, but in control after a devastating discovery. It's about a woman who wants to be bad but also wants to be good to herself. She "wins" the battle with herself, bot by finding compassion, but by finding humor in the situation. You go girl.
From her bio, you learn that eccentric personalities have always attracted her. The bio says:
"'I love characters," says Brandy. "When Mount St. Helens erupted, I remember my grandmother just standing on the porch, smoking a cigarette, and watching the hot mud fall from the sky. My grandmother was my favorite character in life."
You get a lot of those eccentric characters on Brandy Clark's album, 12 Stories. Some of them are characters you can look up to. Others, well, not so much. Some just sound like your next door neighbor, or maybe they even sound like you. To quote from her bio again:
“I think my music is a dark comedy, just as I think life is a dark comedy,” says Brandy. “The truth is funny sometimes. I don’t ever want to come across as corny or novelty, but you have to laugh at things. I feel like this record is about what’s really going on in life.”
That pretty much sums it all up for this song.
