One of my most cherished interviews ever was with Bettye LaVette. In that interview she stressed that she didn't cover other people's songs. Instead, she interprets songs. It's an important distinction because some one who covers a song is generally trying to capture the vibe of the original. But a song interpreter gets inside the core of the song and makes it her own. It's finding something completely new in the song that wasn't in the original. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in Bettye LaVette's interpretation of Willie Nelson's "Somebody Pick Up My Pieces" from her Scene Of The Crime album.
