Malcolm Holcombe - Another Black Hole
The cover of Malcolm Holcombe's new Album, Another Black Hole, is a bleak picture of death, misery, and poverty. Like so many other folk singers, he tends to dedicate himself to singing songs about the downtrodden folks who are barely able to scrape by. But here's what sets him apart. He's not one of those whiny, teary, trembling folk singers. He's brutally realistic, full of withering anger, street-wise, and as unshakable as the North Carolina Appalachian Mountains he comes from. When he takes the stage, it's like he's the only adult in the room and he's going to Tell You Like It Is. The characters in his songs take life as it is, make the best of their situation, and keep trying. What else are they going to do? And that's where the strength and inspiration comes from the songs. And somehow, someway, it all adds up to an album that's more upbeat and entertaining than you'd expect.
I'm adding "Sweet Georgia," "Another Black Hole," "Don't Play Around," "Someone Missing," and "Papermill Man" to rotation.
