I've not covered Alejandro Escovedo nearly enough on my shows over the years. Let's just say he's got a vision and he pursues it and it occasionally lines up with popular music at the time and sometimes it doesn't and it's always amazing. His latest incarnation is called The Alejandro Escovedo Experience and it lines up with the rock & roll genre of music, but with a few twists. Hey is that a cellist on stage?
The new line up provides the opportunity to dig into Escovedo's back catalog, including this wall-of-sound experience, Chelsea Hotel, from his Real Animal album. It's a Chuck Prophet co-write and the attitude oozing from Escovedo is priceless. Is it rage and scorn? Is it matter-of-fact ambivalence? Kinda depends on what you bring to it, I think. What do you get out of it?
This performance is from Aug 27, 2016 at the Austin City Limits Live Moody Theatre during a benefit for the Austin Child Guidance Center. Band is Alejandro Escovedo (guitar and vocals), Mitch Watkins (guitar), Brian Standefer (cello), Karla Manzur (vocals), Scott Laningham (drums), Daniel Durham (bass), Elias Haslanger (tenor saxophone), Sean Giddings (keyboards).
